Beauty at Any Age: A Pro’s Mature Makeup Guide

Over time, skin changes. If you’re a mature bride, mother of the couple, or wedding guest, consider updating your products and routine. In this article, Judy Porter, a make-up artist and esthetician at Blush Now, addresses the unique challenges that come with aging. She shares some of her must-have wedding products that tackle these challenges. Why wait for the wedding? Start enjoying the fresh new you, read on.

Hot Tip

“Get a professional facial or use an at home gentle exfoliator prior to your wedding day. As our skin ages, our complexion changes. It loses its vibrancy, and our pores, lines, and texture become more noticeable.”

If a professional facial is in the budget, this is a great way to help skin cell turnover and shedding. As we age, this process slows down which means that getting a little extra help is always appreciated. Judy’s recommends an oxygen facial or a facial that includes gentle exfoliation.

Step 01: Exfoliate Before You Start

Eminence Strawberry Rhubarb Dermafoliant

$48

4.2 Ounces

In no time, new baby skin cells will expose themselves and this will help your skin’s vibrancy. Make sure to do this no closer than two weeks before your wedding to avoid any chance of a reaction affecting your skin on your wedding day. Judy emphasizes that this is not the time to do a facial peel or anything too aggressive.  Look for facials with a gentle enzyme or a gentle physical scrub. If you prefer an at home gentle exfoliant, Judy suggests trying Eminence Strawberry Rhubarb Dermafoliant.

Step 02: Apply Favorite Moisturizer

The Ordinary Natural Moisturizing Factors

$20

To kick off your day of makeup routine, begin by applying your favorite moisturizer. This is not the day to try something new! Stick to your favorites, we like The Ordinary.

Step 03: Primer Ready

Photo Finish Smooth & Blur Primer

$35

1 Fl Oz

Apply your primer all over your face and neck! This will help your makeup last and will blur little imperfections everywhere that you apply it. Judy’s recommendation is Photo Finish by Smashbox

Step 04: Get The Bridal Glow

Hollywood Flawless Filter

$61

E.L.F Halo Glow

$14

For a complexion boost Judy suggests using the Charlotte Tilbury Flawless Filter. Apply to the high points of your face like the forehead, cheekbones, bridge of nose, top of cupid’s bow, and the chin. Complexion perfection! If you are looking for a cheaper option, try the ELF Halo Glow Liquid Filter

Step 05: Light Foundation

MAC Studio Fix Fluid SPF 15

$40

Follow with your favorite light foundation. As Judy mentions, “We don’t want anything too heavy here. If you are looking to hide your wrinkles, it’s always a rule of thumb to not use too much makeup. More makeup does not mean less wrinkles.”

Step 06: Hush, Just Use A Liquid Blush

Beauty Light Wand Pillow Talk Original

$26

Apply your blush! For this step Judy likes to use Charlotte Tilbury Beauty Light Wands. She prefers using a cream or liquid blush over the traditional powder as it provides hydration to skin experiencing moisture loss. Another added benefit of liquid blush is its quick set time, ensuring your cheeks stay rosy throughout the day.

Step 07: Aaaaand Onto The Eyes!

MAC Paint Pot Painterly

$32

Begin by priming your eyelids, a vital step. This improves eyeshadow application, especially for lids that are lined or creased, ensuring a smooth and even look. You can achieve this with an eyeshadow primer or a concealer followed by powder. Judy prefers to use MAC Paint Pots for this step. When it comes to eyeshadow, stick to mostly matte colors. A touch of shimmer can be used to brighten the eyes, but remember to keep it away from fine lines as it can make them appear more prominent. Instead, apply the shimmer to the inner corners and close to the lash line on the middle of the lid only.

We recommend staying away from heavy liner, winged liner, and dark colors as these can age the appearance of the skin in the area of application.”

Step 08: Creamy Lips

MAC Lip Glass Lip Gloss

$22

In color Cultured

Laura Mercier Lip Parfait Creamy Colourbalm

$28

In color Sweet Guava

Opt for a creamy or hydrating lip color or gloss. Long wear or matte lipsticks can look and feel dry as well as accentuating texture and fine line changes. When it comes to creamy lip color and lipsticks, Judy’s favorite brands are MAC, Laura Mercier, or Charlotte Tilbury.

Step 09: Lashes Out

Ardell False Lashes Faux Mink Demi Wispies

$8.75

False lashes are a must! They can give the effect of a lash lift. Judy’s recommends the Ardell Demi Whispies

Step 10: Color The Brows

Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz

$25

It is always recommended to add some color to your brows. You can do so in whatever way you choose – powders, gels, pencils. “As we age, our brows thin so we want to make sure our eyes have a beautiful brow to frame them,” Judy explains.

Step 11: Finishing Touches

Birsppy Morphe Continuous Setting Mist

$17

82.8 ml

If you use powder, apply with a very light hand. Wrap everything together with some setting spray. Judy likes to use Morphe Continuous Setting Mist as it produces even coverage as an aerosol and is a fantastic performer.

You’re all set! Your mature makeup products and routine are in the palm of your hand now! Remember that you found your person and it’s time for your big day! That’s the best natural glow anyone could ask for.

These products are designed to enhance your natural beauty, not hide it, and to give you a flawless complexion, a bridal glow, and a stunning eye and lip look. Whether you are a bride, a mother of the couple, or a wedding guest, these products will help you feel confident and gorgeous on the special occasion.
